The Beauty of Stained Glass

Art Nouveau is an international movement and style of art, architecture and applied art—especially the decorative arts—that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century (1890–1905). The name ‘Art Nouveau’ is French for ‘new art’. It is also known as Jugendstil, or German, for ‘youth style’ which was named after the magazine Jugend that promoted it. In Italy, Stile Liberty from the department store in London, Liberty & Co., popularized the style. A reaction to academic art of the 19th century, it is characterized by organic, especially floral and other plant-inspired motifs, as well as highly stylized, flowing curvilinear forms.  When this style was at its peak, it was considered very modern for the time.  Many companies used this style for their ads and theaters used it for their play posters.

Art Nouveau spread quickly throughout Europe in the 19th century.  There were expo events on the art style all over the country, and at the time, anyone who could afford any kind of art was investing in Art Nouveau.  The natural, flowing look of this style were extremely appealing to many people, and it’s then-modern style has carried over into today’s art lovers.

Art Nouveau sought to modernize it’s popular predecessor style, Rococo.  Rococo was extremely elaborate, and many designers used Art Nouveau to create more natural, believable artwork, that still felt ornate.  This included many architectural works that were much more simple than Rococo, and included more inspiration from nature, like seaweed leaves, and even insects.   Many designers used Art Nouveau in other mediums, such as glass art, sculptures, ceramics, and paintings.

Art Nouveau stained glass for your home

Today, however, Art Nouveau is considered a traditional art form, and it is often incorporated in classically styled homes.  At Scottish Stained Glass, we can create pieces that include the flowing curvature of this beautiful art style, incorporating a piece of art history into your windows.  If your home or business has traditional architecture, an Art Nouveau inspired window may be the perfect addition.

Art Nouveau is used in many traditional homes and buildings today.  If you love artwork in these styles, consider stained glass as another work of art that can be added to your home.  In many cases, adding stained glass windows will actually increase the value of your home, while creating a beautiful focal point for whichever room you choose.

The overall use of flatsome is very VERY useful. It lacks very few, if any, things! I loved it and have created my first ever website Punsteronline.com! Best yet, flatsome gets free updates that are great! (and the support is amazing as well!:)
