History of Mission Style Stained Glass

Mission style artwork was largely the result of the Arts and Crafts Movement, which took place in North America between the years of 1880 and 1920. Prior to this time period, artistic styles were more ornate and elaborate. The movement originated from an attempt to reform art and design in Britain and establish a new set of design principles. Soon after, it spread across the world, gaining popularity first in the rest of Europe and then spreading to North America, Japan, and elsewhere.

When the Arts and Crafts Movement reached the U.S., it inspired a discussion of what art and design ideals should be for Americans. This led to the development of the Craftsman style aesthetic. From the Craftsman style, the term “Mission style” was born. Furniture and decorations rendered in this new style emphasized simplicity. Designs were composed using almost solely clean horizontal and vertical lines. Instead of focusing on shapes and colors, attention was drawn to the beauty of the natural materials themselves.

Famous Artists & Influences

Mission style stained glass is very often associated exclusively with Frank Lloyd Wright, but there were a number of other skilled artists working during the period that developed their own unique looks. Among these were Gustav Stickley, George Washington Maher, J. Williams Beal, Julia Morgan, William Morris, Arthur H. Mackmurdo, and Bernard Maybec.

While Frank Lloyd Wright was not the only designer of the time using this style, he was perhaps the most famous one.  His designs reflect the simple, geometric styles seen in Mission homes, and he built upon this style greatly.  Much of his work is what we still call modern style today.  At Scottish Stained Glass, we provide many designs based on Wright’s work as well.

Wright’s work led to the development of an entirely new artistic style, separate from Mission, called Prairie School style. Prairie style is similar to Mission style in many respects, with some slight differences. Prairie designs focused more on the beauty of nature, but maintained the same type of simplicity. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the interest of both Prairie and Mission style designs.
